English terms: same meaning or different?

English terms: same meaning or different?

These terms from UI and AMOS:

  • My private files
  • Private files
  • Personal files

look to me as if they mean the same thing. If they do, we should really pick one and use it everywhere. The terms are also used as parts of many longer strings.

Am I missing something?

The Finnish version seems to have 5 translations for the 3 english strings, which is why I'm looking for clarification.

Hi Pertti,

In Moodle 2.9, the word 'My' was removed from a lot of places where it was obvious that the page applied to the user, such as preferences (MDL-49983).

The block 'My private files' was renamed 'Private files', though I notice there is still a string myfiles in core. I don't know if it is still used, or can be removed?

I searched AMOS for 'Personal files' and couldn't find it in any standard components. Is it used in an additional plugin?

To summarise, I think we should be using 'Private files' everywhere.

Thanks,

I'm not sure how I managed to see "Personal files" and "My private files".

Anyway, now I know that I should look into reducing the number of Finnish translations for this. It is confusing, as is.
