How to identify plugins worth translating

I wonder if it could be possible (and not too difficult or time-consuming) for a programmer to make the code to:

  • Select only those that this month are currently installed in more than {150%} the number of sites than they were {12 months} ago; that is, they had a 50% increase in installed numbers in one year.

And that this information be available as a new, 'Hot plugins' tab, alongside 'Relevance,  Sites, Downloads, Fans, Recently updated and Recently added' existing tabs at https://moodle.org/plugins .

If the numbers {inside curly brackets} could be changed  by means of a dropdown menu, it would be fantastic.

This list of Hot plugins would be the ones I would like to put in my top priority list to translate their English language strings and their Moodle Docs pages.

Would this be worth adding to the Moodle Tracker?

Would other AMOS translator also be interested in having such a new feature ?

Hi German,

I think this could be a good and usefull addition.

I only wonder how to catch new and promising plugins, without waiting for one year.

Hi Séverin,

I have found the list of plugins with a reviewer's choice badge award (https://moodle.org/plugins/browse.php?list=award&id=1 ) an interesting collection  of plugins, that might be worth considering for translation. I actually think they should also be worth considering adopting into Moodle core (or at least, funding by MUAsmile

This option would be a nice addition to the available options in AMOS, and far more useful (for me) than the 'greylisted strings only' option.

What I have also tried to do is translating the plugins that get an Early bird badge (https://moodle.org/plugins/browse.php?list=award&id=10), as this means that the plugin developers try to keep the plugin updated and up to Moodle coding standars.

If we could have all of these new criteria added to an AMOS plugin selection widget, we could maximize the benefits of a highly efficient translation of 'the best' Moodle plugins, and hopefully benefit the largest number of Moodle users in languages other than English smile

Thanks Koen,

I had seen that page a long time ago, but it does not have the data I really want to have available for assessing the usefullness of translating a given plugin.

The most interesting stats pages I have seen are:

General plugin stats at https://moodle.org/plugins/stats.php (I try to keep 100% translated all the 20 most popular plugins)

and the individual plugin types stat pages, such as https://moodle.org/plugins/stats.php?plugin_category=29 for quiz question types.

I put the priorities that I think are worth taking into account at the documentation page in https://docs.moodle.org/dev/Translating_plugins#Plugin_translation_priority. Please feel free to change as you think is appropriatte.
