New features of AMOS

Several improvements of AMOS were included recently and I am going to describe them here a bit.

Google translator is now integrated. Click the "g" icon near the English string to get a translation suggested by Google displayed. If the icon does not appear to you, please check if Google uses the same language code as we do. Please report any mapping needed, for example for Chinese we will need to add correct mapping from our lang codes to the Google one. You have to manually copy/paste the Google translation into the editing field. Please review the syntax of the automatic translation carefully. It was observed that Google breaks our {$a} placeholders syntax and HTML tags.

If the English original is empty, the string is not reported as missing. This is especially needed for some special strings in editor_tinymce.

Height of the textarea editor now expands to 100% of available space in the table row.

The stashes are finally implemented. Stash is a snapshot of the current stage state. You can use it as a backup of your work, for example. Stashes are not deleted when you log off. There is a special stash called AUTOSAVE automatically handled by AMOS. AUTOSAVE keeps the most recent state of the stage and it is updated everytime you stage a string.

Stashes can be also shared. At the moment, sharing with language pack maintainers is implemented so that everybody can stash their work and offer it to the maintainers for the inclusion. This is done by so called pull request.

I plan to extend the sharing features so that user can set the stash as public. Then everybody who knows the URL of that stash (which contains a unique hash) will be able to access it. Contributor will just publish or email the URL of their public stashes and other users will be able to use it, continue on work or modify and eventually publish the new version again etc.

The last important not-yet implemented feature is import/export via ordinary files. I strongly incline to use XLIFF format. I hope it will allow to use external/offline translation tools.

I am leaving for holiday on this Friday and will not be available until Sep 15. If you can, please test the new features as soon as possible so I have a chance to fix most obvious bugs at least. Thanks in advance.

Hi David,

Thank you for these new features, roughly tested and very cool.

Do I understand correctly that with the " stash feature, I could bring my team of translators in AMOS for the translation ? If yes, is the workflow below acceptable/correct ?

  1. Translation team member create their account on AMOS
  2. (optional) Each member edit her profile to set the default language
  3. The "Pull request" feature is enabled automatically for them (??, otherwise, how ?)
  4. The works begin and the official maintainer can recall the team's stashes for correction/validation.

Another question: would it be possible to retain the filter settings between sessions (and/or to define "custom pre-defined filters" for the users of AMOS)? This could be a very useful feature.

Thanks for your answer and have a good holiday!

Nicolas

Hi Nicolas,

yes, stash sharing will allow cooperative translation model. "Pull requests" are enabled by default for anybody. You team member will just work in AMOS and once he/she is happy with their work in the staged, they will just stash it. At the Stashes page, they will find "Pull request" button. Once they share their stash this way, it will appear at your stashes page as "Incoming pull request". You will be able to apply the shared stash into your stage and continue as if you were the author of the translation.

Please note these are just first working prototypes. I am pretty sure the whole system will be improved yet to support the workflow better (like accept/deny the pull request etc.).

Thanks for the tip with the persistent filter setting. Can you please file it in the tracker (MDLSITE project)?

Thanks David,

Issue created here: MDLSITE-967.

And thanks for the explanations. Just thinking loud that AMOS localisation of the git-ish terminology would help non specialist translators wink

Cheers, Nicolas

Hi David,

You mentioned Chinese, but I can't find the cute "g" icon when do translation in Chinese pack. Does it mean you still not add the mapping? If yes, please add Chinese mapping.

Thank you!

Hello,

Thanks for this great tool, allowing easy collaborative work Sourire

To save time, it would be good to add a small button, replacing "Google translate" when clicked, and that would automatically copy Google suggested translated string to the "Translation" field, and putting focus in it Langue tirée
